6 Reasons Why You Should Choose a Contractor for a Home Remodel

August 23, 2013

With the recent surge in the housing market, more and more people are looking to remodel their homes. But where are they looking?

In the modern remodeling landscape, more and more people are looking to cut out the middleman and make repairs on their own. DIY is almost as trendy an abbreviation as YOLO these days, as homeowners look to megastores like the Home Depot and Lowes to buy supplies that they can install themselves.

But DIY (Do It Yourself) might not be the best option for remodeling your home. After all, major repairs are a bit more complicated than replacing a light bulb.

Here are six reasons why you should choose a contractor for your remodeling job instead of DIY.

1. Experience.

Chances are, most contractors have more experience than you do (unless you’re a contractor yourself). Contractors work on hundreds of homes a year, and they know how to adapt to different situations and issues that might arise during the project.

2. Safety.

Remodeling a home by yourself can be a dangerous process. Some projects involve climbing, working with electricity or a combination of those potentially lethal tasks. If you’re taking on these projects by yourself and something goes wrong, the results could be fatal. Don’t ever risk your life over a remodeling project. Trust a professional.

3. Schedule.

While you might have time allotted to take on a remodeling project, if the work runs behind schedule, you’ll either be left with a half-finished project or you’ll have to make adjustments to your schedule to finish the job. This process can cost you time, convenience and even money.

Contractors will likely get the job done quickly and effectively. They’re skilled at working under deadlines, and their considerable experience often allows them to install and remove items efficiently.

4. Price.

There’s a common misconception that cutting out contractors from a home remodeling project saves money. Some homeowners believe that it’s more cost-efficient to buy the products they need at a home improvement store and install it themselves than it is to pay a contractor for the products and the installation.

While this theory seems sound at first, it often doesn’t factor in other costs — such as equipment needed to install these products and the fuel needed to haul items from a store to a home. These factors can wash out the differences in costs.

Also, if you’re working on a remodeling project yourself and make mistakes, you’ll likely need to buy and install replacement products. That process can end up wiping out any money you might have saved by taking on the project yourself. Don’t take the risk of saving a few bucks.

relationship stress and remodeling

Taking on a home remodeling project by yourself can be stressful for both yourself and loved ones.

5. Stress.

This can be another major cost with DIY repair work. The process of remodeling your home can leave you mentally exhausted — particularly if things don’t go exactly to plan and you need to make adjustments to the project.

Even if you aren’t worried about the mental strain that a DIY home remodeling project can place on you, you should think about the emotional toll it could take on your loved ones. Home remodeling projects can weigh on your relationship in general, and these issues can be exacerbated if you’re taking on the burden of the repairs yourself.

While shoddy contract work can leave you with a different type of stress, trusting the project to an established and well-rated contractor will likely give you piece of mind.

6. Satisfaction.

If you’re looking to take on a remodeling project by yourself, you probably have a particular vision for how the completed project will look. And if the final project doesn’t match up with your grand vision, it can be frustrating.

Heck, even if everything goes right, you still might not be satisfied. Many people are their own harshest critics; even those homeowners that aren’t highly self-critical might only be able to meet their expectations for a project, rather than exceeding those expectations. That means that there’s a higher chance that you’ll be frustrated than ecstatic when all is said and done.

By trusting the project to a contractor, you leave open the opportunity to be pleasantly surprised by the results. Since the best contractors tend to carry years of experience, sterling reputations and the ability to work efficiently, the project might end up better than you ever imagined. This, in turn, will likely make you very satisfied with the results.
